Course Catalog Description

Reading and composition in connection with the study of dramatic literature. R1A satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement, and R1B satisfies the second half.

Class Description

This course traces the rise of virtual communities of dance across the world. The phenomenon of mediatized dance uploaded on social media platforms such as YouTube has confounded existing dichotomies of amateur and professional, popular and high art, commercial and non-commercial. The networked nature of social media has also made issues of race and representation, embodiment and virtuality, copyright and ownership acute. This course approaches YouTube based dance videos as objects of research and write papers on the implication of these technological shifts in dance as a mode of cultural practice. As a research writing course, we will think go through traditional methods for college-level research papers, while gathering data from online resources, reading and analyzing screen dances, studying the effects of mediatization on traditional and classical forms of dance, tracking the virtual networks of dance enthusiasts. Students will be free to select cases/objects for their papers primarily from YouTube, though other social media formats-TikTok and Instragram, for instance-- that support video documentation will also accepted. Students of this class are also required to produce a work of screen dance in solo or group projects, using their personal hand-held devices.
