Course Catalog Description
Reading and composition in connection with the study of dramatic literature. R1A satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement, and R1B satisfies the second half.
Class Description
This course investigates the everyday and staged performances of race, class, and space in the city of Oakland, CA in order to think through their social, political, and aesthetic effects on our lives. As a research-focused R1B course, we will deploy the critical reading and analytical writing skills developed in R1A courses towards a final research project that addresses performances of race, class, and space at a site (physical, artistic, or virtual) of your choosing. Our discussions, in-class writing practices, reading responses, and peer review will not only help us develop the foundational skills needed to conduct ethical academic research, but also to critically engage with contemporary issues using the wisdom of your own lived experiences.
