Class Description
In the age of neoliberalism, self-branding and individual identities are all the craze. Although America loves to portray a melting pot sense of diversity and colorblindness a brief look into popular debates around DNA ancestry tests or biracial music artists reveals a reemergent focus on which exact mixtures are going in the pot. In this course, we will explore the idea that racial and ethnic identities are dynamic performances rather than static categories conferred by birth. By turning to popular culture and digital media, we will examine how identities can be seen as narratives that are addressed to an audience. This course is writing intensive and will involve developing strategies for approaching media, scholarly articles, and everyday life with a critical eye. As a result, the class content will include material from disciplines such as sociology and performance studies as well as social media and YouTube videos.
