Course Catalog Description
Reading and composition in connection with the study of dramatic literature. R1A satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement, and R1B satisfies the second half.
Class Description
This course will take an intersectional approach to the field of Performance studies, asking how
the field can help us understand gender, race, class, and sexuality. We will examine a range of
20 th and 21 st century aesthetic and political practices by women of color in response to various
structures of oppression, beginning with 1960s feminist activism against Latin American
dictatorships and 1970s women-led liberation and freedom movements in the US. We will study
poetry, street art, theatre collectives, installations, political movements, and other genres of
performance. This is a reading and composition course that will primarily focus on teaching
student skills for successfully writing essays for their university courses, and will also encourage
students to critically analyze performance, analyze visual culture, and build vocabularies around
feminist histories and practices.
