Course Catalog Description

This class treats France and the Francophone world as a laboratory for the study of Jewish civilization over the past millennium. France has the world’s second largest Jewish population outside of Israel. It has a rich and complex history that traces all the key developments of the Jewish experience since ancient times: expulsions and migrations; codification of Jewish law; religious reform; the rise of anti-Semitism and the tragedy of the Holocaust; struggles between Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews; complex relations between Muslims and Jews; the emergence modern Jewish politics; and the impact of the Israeli-Arab conflict. As we explore these themes and other themes, students become introduced to most fields of Jewish studies.

This class will combine lecture and discussion, with synchronous and asynchronous dimensions. Lectures will be delivered synchronously, and combined during the same synchronous sessions with time for discussion. But the lectures will also be available asynchronously as videos on bcourses shortly after class, and for any student that cannot participate in the wider synchronous classes, we will set up a separate time to tune in for synchronous discussion. Students will need to attend either the synchronous larger class meeting or the separate synchronous discussion to be successful in the class.

The final assessment in the class will be a take-home, final exam (open note and open book) that students have a few days to complete, rather than a sit-down, three-hour final. show less
