Course Catalog Description

Basic concepts of operating systems and system programming. Utility programs, subsystems, multiple-program systems. Processes, interprocess communication, and synchronization. Memory allocation, segmentation, paging. Loading and linking, libraries. Resource allocation, scheduling, performance evaluation. File systems, storage devices, I/O systems. Protection, security, and privacy.

* Discussion sections - will be synchronous and a few in-person discussion sections may be offered. Please note that meeting times in system are PENDING REVIEW and subject to change.

* There is no intention to expand the enrollment capacity past 408.

* UC Berkeley will begin the fall 2020 semester with fully remote instruction in accordance with public health guidelines. We will keep a fully remote option open for all students but also be prepared to implement our plans for select in-person instruction activities for those students who can take advantage of them, as conditions allow, even if it is part way through the semester. Students should plan for remote classes until further notice by the faculty.

* In addition to the lecture, you must in enroll in DIS 999 to enroll in the course. Selection and assignment into the actual discussions happen outside of CalCentral and will be managed by teaching staff.

* Once discussion section AND design review session times are finalized, attendance is required.

* Students must participate in these events WITH A CAMERA TURNED ON.

* Camera usage will be required for exam proctoring on Zoom as well. show less
