Class Description
The purpose of this graduate seminar is to address how we can facilitate the further development of Site Stewardship Programs designed to protect and preserve archaeological remains in Central California. The course will explore how we can work with local tribes and resources agencies, such as California State Parks and the National Park Service, to better document and protect ancestral places. We will review Site Stewardship programs that have been implemented by various resource agencies since the 1980s and 1990s in California and other western states. We will then work with local tribes and resource agencies to see what new innovations may be employed in the protection and preservation of selected sites. These may include methods for documenting, recording and mapping archaeological remains, as well as evaluating and recording impacts to sites caused by people (looting, vandalism) and nature (erosion, flooding, etc.).
