Course Catalog Description
Sophomore seminars are small interactive courses offered by faculty members in departments all across the campus. Sophomore seminars offer opportunity for close, regular intellectual contact between faculty members and students in the crucial second year. The topics vary from department to department and semester to semester. Enrollment limited to 15 sophomores.
Class Description
In Buddhist Economics, we will explore how the assumptions of interdependence, impermanence, and altruism are the foundation for an economy that cares for all people and the planet. This "Buddhist economy" is compared to a "Free Market economy." Some questions that we address are these: What creates happiness? What is an equitable distribution of income? How is our own well-being related to the well-being of other people and the planet? How should we measure the performance of economic growth?
