Course Catalog Description

An experimental approach to chemical sciences with emphasis on developing fundamental, reproducible laboratory technique and a goal of understanding and achieving precision and accuracy in laboratory experiments. Proper use of laboratory equipment and standard wet chemical methods are practiced. Areas of investigations include chemical equilibria, spectroscopy, nanotechnology, green chemistry, and thermochemistry. Concurrent enrollment in 1A is recommended.

Chem 1AL may be taken concurrently with Chem 1A, or after passing Chem 1A with a grade of C- or higher. If taken concurrently, students may not drop 1A and remain in 1AL. Chem 1AL may be taken concurrently with Chem 1A, or after passing Chem 1A with a grade of C- or higher. If taken concurrently, students may not drop 1A and remain in 1AL. CalCentral enrollments and adjustments initiated by students after the end of Phase II will not be valid. Lectures will begin on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. Students must attend their Chem 1AL lab section during the week of August 28- September 1, 2017, or be dropped. A lab exam will be held during the last week of formal instruction on the evening of Friday, December 1st, 2017. There will be no makeup exams for this class, all students enrolled must be able to attend this exam as scheduled.
An additional VOL section is being offered throughout the semester each week on Thursdays from 7:00-9:00pm in 100 Lewis.
